  • Too much slop, in gear shift

Where can I get the bushing or whatever its called, that is at the base of the floor shifter, I have way too much play in the shifter and I guess the bushing may be the answer..... :?:

I took mine apart and cleaned it and greased it and it worked much better, I think the spring under the shifter couldn't move well because of many years of dirt and buildup, After I cleaned it all out it worked way better.

i will try that, but i got under the car and looked at the hole that the shifter comes thru and noticed the rubber looks kinda worn, mine shifts fine (except for grinding going into reverse), but there is alot of free movement in the stick, like the old vw bugs had...how did u go about removing yours?

I took the entire assembly out and disassembled it on the floor. four 10 mm nuts under the carpet at the edges edges of the hole
then dropped it out or forced it out by the exhaust pipe. and removed the 14 mm bolt at the trans. there may be some bushings there. but they can be matched up with plastic bushings from the hardware or auto parts store.
then remove the half ball thingy from the shifter and clean and grease, kinda messy.

Could also be the bushings on the linkage, they tend to go out a lot more often than the one on the floor.

In almost every case sloppy shifting is due to the bushings on the linkage rotting out.

I remember someone saying that if the large bushing on the floor is bad, the shifter will drop down and hit the exhaust or ground.

              .
Who sells the linkage bushings for the Festiva, or do you just take the old ones out and hope to find a match at parts store?
