  • Bouncing and vibrating speedometer cable .........92 festiva

    Hey,
My speedometer is bouncing and vibtating pretty bad, my mechanic told me to remove my display panel and lubricate the coil., I tried to do that and couldnt get it out. Is there anyway to do it from underthe hood, or does anyone know how else to go about fixing this.

Disconnect from the top of the trans. Then I would pull the cable from the housing with the housing still in the firewall. Lube it up and slide it back in.

        First auto or manual?
If manual have the mechanic check the trans fluid, and fill if needed, now that he has the speedo drive out, which also is the fluid fill and Level check point, haha, ask if he could please lubricate the cable. (batt eyelashes a little at this point)
He will have the cable in his hand, making it difficult to say no. He can pull the inner cable and lube it as stated above.
I haven't worked on any automatics so don't know if the fill is the same.

devious little trick but may work.
        it runs so sweet

It may be the speedometer itself, rather than the cable. Get a Haynes manual for pics on how to remove it (and for a ton of other reasons that will come up :-)). I've tried lubricating the speedo mechanism with both graphite and silicone, both of which work for a while, but not permanently.

I've lubed mine w/ graphite cable lube and it lasts for a while, mines starting to shake a little again (seems worse in the cold weather) but i don't care 2 much, i drive more by feel than by the speedo, its not accurate in my car nyway.

I'm with the above though, you can trace the speedo cable on its way out of the fire wall down to the back of the trany, turn off the retaining knob and pull the cable straight up. You can then pull the inside of the cable out and lube it and then slide it back... only takes a few minutes!
