Ok guys I got a couple of guestions for you guys. First of all I have gutted my festiva quite a bit and one thing that I havent touched yet is that octapus looking emissions contraption on the driver side rear inner fender that hooks up to the fuel tank. I would love to ditch it as long as my car will still run fine without it but I do not know what role it plays or its importance so it has remained in there thus far. Secondly I swapped a carbed 88 festy with a b6t engine and have done lots of work such as a bigger turbo and more boost, I still have the narrower carburated fuel lines in place and was wondering if they should be upgraded to ones off of an efi model or if it should be fine with the carbed lines. Are you referring to the big black round thing - the charcoal cannister? It traps and stores gasoline vapours and feeds them back into the engine at startup so they don't float free and contaminate the atmosphere. If you smell fuel fumes in the car when you get in to start it up in the morning one of the things to look for is a disconnected hose on the charcoal cannister.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.

No not the charcoal canister, I actually deleted that a while ago when I first got my swap running. The part I am refering to is located in the rear of the car, if you removed the driver side plastic panel in the rear under the back window and next to the back seat there is a metal acess panel like the one for the top of the fuel tank and if you remove it you can see the filler neck and then some type of octapus looking emissions related contraption that has hoses coming and going into the fuel tank. This might very well be carburated model specific but I am not sure. The main concern I have however is wether the fuel feed and fuel return hardlines that travel under the car are smaller diameter on carbed models compared to fuel injected models. My car is running on a much larger turbo than the stock vj14 and I am pushing 14 pounds right now and will be pushing 19 pounds next year with an even bigger turbo so if the carbed fuel lines are infact smaller diameter than that of the efi model ones I will be switching them out most likley unless somebody can vouch for running alot of boost on carbed lines.Originally posted by WmWattAre you referring to the big black round thing - the charcoal cannister? thats no problem dude, I actually removed the emissions thing near the tank today while I was upgrading my tiny carbed hard lines to 9/16" rubber lines and it starts and idles fine.Originally posted by WmWattSorry, I see now your wrote "rear fender". DCrows, both my '92 5 speed and my '93 auto have that "octopus lines and cannister" in the back left fender area, so it ain't "carb specific."
The only thing I can tell you is that neither the shop or Haynes manuals seem to cover much of anything to do with this crap.
You might check ebay for an emissions specific manual?? I too am interested in just what that crap does and what will happen if we ditch it.
I like simplicity, but not at the cost of MPGs or killing more than half-a-dozen fuzzy baby seals!
