  • Valve Job, Head Gasket Repair Help

I am going to replace the intake and exhaust valves and figured I would do the head gasket while I am in there.

I have done a lot of work before on cars, but not much engine work beyond valve cover gaskets, oil changes, plugs, and basic stuff.

I am ordering the Haynes manual - Are there any specific areas that I should be careful with / common mistakes when doing this??

Also, how many hours would one estimate it would take a first timer to get this repair completed??

    Thanks 8)

1st a couple of questions: what kind of car?...how many miles on the engine?...what makes you think the vavles need replacing?

If you have never done valves before...its best to send the head out completely assembled to a local shop and have them do it. In our area, we have a local shop that will pull the valves, grind the seats and put new stem seals in for $10 per cylinder.

I would recommend that you obtain the Haynes manual and read it first...It's pretty good book. If your still interested...From a good parts house purchase a full upper end gasket set and a time belt set.

But some answers first would be most helpfull.

If your putting all that work into it I would suggest a waterpump and front crankshaft seal also.

If your getting that serious into repairs, forget the haynes manual. Get a factory repair manual off of ebay.

If you look at this thread, posted not too long ago, you will see how I came to this point.

I have no compression in cyl. #3 I am not sure what the culprit is (intake or exhaust valve) but the cylinder is not sealing. I have no compressed air to do the leak down test.

Anyway, if I were to send this out, anyone have an idea of the cost??

I feel I should just do it myself.. it is a Festiva L 1993 163,000 miles.

          Thanks
