  • New gas tank

So i just bought a new gas tank... (it cost me more than my car did originally  ) And its just bare metal. What could i coat it with so it dosent rust away? It kinda has a waxy coating on it so im not too sure what will atchuley stick to it?

Any parts store sells undercoating in spray or brush on. That will work well. Spray will dry in a day, brush on can take a couple of days to dry, also it's a pain todeal with when cold.

The waxy stuff is release/lube used in the manufacturing dies and it's left on to act as a rust inhibitor for shipping not for over the road...will come off with any petroleum type thinner.

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

all fuel tanks are supposed to be galvinzed, so it shouldn't require a coating.

I did spray my new tank with a 3M undercoating after cleaning off the slippery gunk.

Galvanizing won't protect it from stones flying up off unpaved roads so I'd definitely coat it with something.

So you got a new tank. My tank was just shipped. I am going to undercoat mine. I live along the coast plenty of fog and of course the salt air. Besides galvanized steel can rust after a while especially if the galvinization is compromised by flying debris or road salt etc.
