  • Setting the timing on a Aspire

Tried to set my timing today, and got a little confused. On the main pulley, there are two marks that show up under the timing light. I assume you are supposed to put the tab in between the two marks? Which way is advanced, and which was is retarded?

As he was perfectly drifting past the apex I looked at Quasimofo and yelled "You know, I have never been in a rollover accident before!"... I think it all went pretty well after that.

Between the marks is wrong Check for a factory label under the hood.

Advance/Retard...you should be able to figure that out with your timing light...that's easier than trying to describe it. Why do you ask? Your not going to improve on the factory setting.

Well, Im not sure that it is even set right, as this 1995 Aspire was a little neglected when I purchased it. So, between the two notches on the main pulley is wrong?

Also, turning the disty clock wise (viewing from the drivers side, looking to the passenger side) advance the timing? or does it retard it?

If the Aspire is like the EFI festiva, the first notch on the (right most) lines up with the ponter on the timing belt cover. With a timing light (set to zero degrees if you have thet option) turn the dist until the notch lines up with the pointer. Do you know that the STI connector has to be grounded hen you set the timing?

From the drivers side turn CW to advance.

For ALL cars (rotors/dist cap)....turn the dist cap in the opposite dirction that the rotor spins to advance the timing....turn the dist cap in the same direction that the rotor spins to retard the timing.

Cool, thanks. I connected the Ground and the TEN plug, as the people at NAPA told me.

My Miata likes to run at about 13 degrees BTDC. Its supposed to be 10. The Aspire doesnt respond similarly?

Be careful...its not advisable to mess with electronic timing where the timing curves are stored in the PCM.
Best over all performance is to follow the factory recomendation...if it runs better over advanced...something else is wrong.

Why is ignition advanced.... so that flame propogation and full combustion (expansion of the burned gas) happens right at or just before BDC.
