Personally I might run some heavy concentration of carb cleaner directly into the injector rails and see if that helps. A new fuel filter is $5-$10- but don't put it on backwards like I did- it flows one direction and is meant to hold pressure, unlike a free flowing carb filter. The heated up aspect of the failure might suggest the coolant temp sensor near the injectors too I, m guessing- I've just read a bit not ever replaced- but you can search that aspect here.

Coolant temperature sensor malfunction should turn on check engine light.
Haynes manual troubleshootnin section has 5 suggestions under "Engine starts but stops immediately" which is closest thing to your symptoms. ... paraphrasing here ....
        1. loose or faulty connections at coil
        2. insufficient fuel reaching injectors
        3. vacuum leak beween intake manifold and throttle body
        4. faut in engine control system
        6. intake air leaks - vacuum lines
Pretty sure #4 would turn on check engine light
        Good hunting.

Do Festys have an idle control valve? - that controls the choke via temperature. Cleaning the one on my Escort helped lower the high idle speed that would not "Kick down" I'd eliminate the part completely and fix the old idle screw, but they removed the slot in the screw/stop to make that difficult and sell more gasoline.
