cut the wire and connector off of the stock one, splice it to the pigtail sticking out of the replacement.

I have the new o2 sensor in. The hardest part was getting the old sensor out. Had to acquire a 22mm wrench and remove the heat shield. Actually, I left one bolt in - victim of rust. However, I now had enough play in the sensor to slip the closed end of the wrench over sensor. I tried the open end but the sensor head started rounding out on me. At anyrate its in. O by the way, the clerk at Kragen's told there is an oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter. If so this is the first I have ever heard of it.

yup, 22mm or 7/8, same thing (within reason).

As for the downstrean HEGO (heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen) sensor, no, Festivas don't have them. In fact, no vehicle before OBDII has them, and that was implemented in 1996 (a few vehicles had OBDII starting in 1994, but 96 it was mandatory). The downstream sensor (after the cat) is called CEM, or Catalyst Efficiency Monitor. Its job is to provide the PCM with information about how well the cat is cleaning up the exhaust. The sensor itself is no different than a HEGO, but the software and stratagies associated with the CEM are very different.

          Jim,

Thanks for the explanation. Since this all started with me needing an engine code interpreted. Is it possible for a sticky to be made with the DTC. I guess I could buy a Haynes manuel since I heard the include the code.

Stuck O2 sensor, 22mm or 7/8, Use what ever is a tigher fit at this point. Box or flare nut wrench will work best.
Run the engine to until the cooling fan cycles 2 or 3 times...then go for it.
You should be able to put the wrench on with the handle pointing down and reach thru the grill or right below for max leverage.
            CAUTION: It will be HOT!

Make sure the new sensor has a little anti seize on the threads

I just cut off a 7/8 box end (old craftsman) about 4" long, upside down with a pipe on it. As soon as it breaks free the 4" long part becomes obvious. Turns father and easier to handle while in there.
                it runs so sweet

The sensor came with anti-sieze on the threads already. My 22mm wrench was long enough. I had to slide partway under the car to get some leverage. Cutting the wrench is a good idea. However, I don't need to change these sensors often so at this time I prefer to keep my wrench intact.

My check engine light came on again. Same symptoms as before at beginning of post. I checked for an engine code. All that happens is that the check engine light turns off after a couple of seconds. Does it mean anything?

Did we just go thru this...the check engine light comes on for several second when the key os turned...just like the rest of the idiot lights...lamp prove out mode..this is how the driver knows if a lamp has failed...

If the lamp does not flash when the test connector is grounded and the key is turned to run...no faults stored...maybe you don't have a problem.

I know that. All the other idiot lights stayed on until I started the engine. The check engine light usually stays on until I started the engine or at least turn it over. But it simply blinks out after a couple of seconds. I checked my radiator fluid and it was low. My water temp gauge has been on the cool side perhap only a quarter up. But it could be a false read if my radiator fluid is too low which could through the O2 sensor off.
