i turn the key and nothing happens but if i apply power directly to the solenoid it clicks but the motor doesn't turn and end engine doesn't turn over. so i am hoping it is a bad starter.

Check the fuses? There are three in the engine compartment, "fusable links", on the driver's side strut tower. There is a fuse panel under the dash on the driver's side. Assume when you insert the key the lights on the dashboard console come on? Headlights work when you turn them on?Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.

fixed it . the previous mechanic had the negative and positive hooked to the battery post on the starter and the coolant fan was plugged into the plugin for the a/c now it cranks over about one turn and fires right off not to fix the other problems.

An 80 AMP fuse is complete overkill for that system. The easiest thing to do is swap the Fusible Links out with Long Leg PAL Fuses. 30-40-30 or Pink Green Pink"The White Turd" 1993 Festiva 144k miles. (Winner of FOTM November 2016)
