Need the Transaxle fluid type

I have a 1989 Festiva automatic changed out the half shaft now I need to know what fluid gos
back in to top it off. its smells like mercon but one can not go by smell alone

1989 owner's manual says Dextron II (says Mercon for manual transmission)
Haynes manaul says Mercon for both manual and automatic
Question has been asked here before and people replied with a variety of other favourites, some for racing.
