You can take the fuel pump block off plate off the head and use the carb car mechanical fuel pump if the cam has the lobe to drive the pump, that will be easier and better than adding a fuel pressure regulator. You'll want to swap to an Escort carb and delete the EGR sysyem for simplicity and reliability. The stock carb is a nightmare to work on and is overly complicated. The choke will need 12v+ and a ground wire.
This looks like the same carb I used when I swapped my '89.
The Festiva Store has carb adapters and EGR block off plates.
The Festiva Store, all things for Festivas, Mazda 121's and Kia Prides. Some products may apply to the protege and other mazda cares as well. Fix your shifter, modify your car through new accessories, or update some parts to make your car run and drive as good as new.
I have some details of swapping from a stock carb to an escort carb here:

I've had many Weber swapped cars 1 escort swapped festy 1 stock carb festy and I think 3 injected festys. I prefer an injected festy anyday. That being said If you have a properly running carby car for parts, your car should run just fine, after the swap, take care to label all the vacuum lines, wires etc. Take pics before you start swapping things.I personally would not swap to Weber or escort if the stock carb is working properly.I also would not disable a properly functioning egr.Egr properly functioning is better for fuel mileage ,cooler combustion temps, better emissions and has no negative impact if working properly. As for the carb adapters they are real easy to make if you do decide to swap to a non O.E. carb. I agree with astronaut that a carb swap would make life simpler, but I drive festiva for the gas mileage, the fuelly cars get better mileage than the carby cars the stock carb gets better mpg than the escort carb. the escort carb gets better mileage than the Weber carb.Last edited by ricko1966; 11-21-2019, 06:28 AM.30 + Vehicle projects right now.7 Festiva/Mazda 10 GM IDK how many others, hope that helps explain all the stupid questions/shortcuts/interchanges etc. trying to liquidate so I concentrate on the good ones.
