  • 1989 automatic 3 spd modulator valve.

When I got this car it wasn't shifting properly. I located the modulator valve but it was totally disconnected. It doesn't look like the typical modulators that I am familiar with. It is about the size of an oil filter and seems to be mechanical. I have no idea it is bad or just disconnected. I also have no idea how it is suppose to be hooked up. Any information or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Modulator valve not mentioned in Haynes manual. A search of the Internet brings up photos and sellers. A search of "problems" brings up general modulator symptoms, nothing specific to the Festiva.
Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.

WmWatt, thank you for your response. There is definitely a modulator onthis car. The vacuum hoses are disconnected and it's non functional. I am hoping someone will know how to restore it so that it can be determined defective or not. Thank you again.

I think as an experiment you could hook manifold vacuum to the modulator and drive it around. See if it shifts correctly. Couldn't hurt.
