Hey everyone! New to the forum but glad to be here! I have a 93 festiva and I’m having an issue and was wondering if you guys have any ideas! When you cold start it in the morning it will idle very very very erratic, idles very high then back down, up and down for at least 15 mins. Then when warm it idles fine. But the biggest issue is that if you leave the house after only letting it warm up for a few minutes and drive it short distances it sputters and coughs and runs very rough, if you drive a short distance and cut it off, when you go to restart it, it will only start if you give it throttle and when it finally starts its sputters and you have to give it throttle until it smooths out, smells very rich when it finally starts. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone

The ECU attempts to control the smooth and efficient running of the engine. The sensors that feed information to it must be present and functioning correctly for it to send the correct signals to the components that control the timing and the volume of fuel and air that reaches the combustion chamber of the engine.
Either one or more of those sensors is disconnected or has failed. (or in rare cases, the ECU itself has failed). (check engine light on?)
(Search the forum for ECU related threads and you will find lots of information on this subject.)
OR
The sensors and control devices (fuel injectors, IAC valve, VAF meter, engine temperature sensors, distributor, and others) are working correctly and a problem exists that it cannot compensate for: vacuum leak, bad fuel pump, bad fuel pressure regulator, bad fuel pump, bad throttle body, bad plugs, bad plug wires, bad fuel etc.
Keep searching this forum for ways to diagnose your problem.. I'm sure you will find the answer is in here somewhere.
Good Luck.
