  • Fuel or air issue?

Hey, first time poster here, just got a '92 GL on Sunday that needs some TLC but I'm really excited for it!

I'm a bit of a noob with cars in general but know a thing or two. A lot of the reason I bought my Festy is to learn how they work/how to work on them and slowly restore it over time.

With that being said, i bought it from a guy who was transparent about a fuel issue that it's having. It runs and drives but pretty rough, and going up even a low grade hill will cause it to sputter like crazy and it was topping out at about 20mph. Was barely able to get it home.

Seller said he put in a new fuel pump (yet to verify for myself but don't see why he'd lie about that) as well as a fuel pressure gauge against the fire wall. When it was idling warm it was getting 20-25psi which according to my research is low but it stayed idling, just rough. Today I started it up cold and was hanging around 30 but then died. So it runs/idles while warm but stalls out when cold. Also noticed when pulling away from a stop it really threatens to stall until I get the RPMs up a bit, but with lots of sputtering.

He also said it had been sitting for about three years so maybe bad gas could contribute?

Also, temp gauge only ever got barely above the bottom notch. Seller claimed the gauge works when I asked.

From what I understand this points to a fuel issue like the seller said also feel like it could be a vacuum issue as well. Open to any ideas, really. If someone could point me in the right direction or a few things to try that would be great. Definitely not looking for the absolute solution as I know this will take some trial and error but just wanting to know where to start.

This ended up being long so thanks for reading!

fuel and air filtres easy to check, also condition of spark plugs and wires. dirt and rust in fuel tank not so easy but doable. look at thread at top of this page to see what an inexpensive manifold vacuum guage can show. longer term a Haynes diagnostic and repair manual helps. also search here an online for digital Festiva manuals. have fun.

Good suggestions! Yeah I guess I didn't think about spark plugs/spark in general. I bought a repair manual a few days ago, should get here on Monday.

While you are waiting for your manual to arrive you could
make sure your plug wiring is correct: counterclockwise rotation.. (I copied this from a 2012 post here on the forum).

Post your Festiva or Aspire repair and maintenance issues. - USE THIS FORUM FOR ANY TECHNICAL RELATED POST (IE. How do I change my oil?, How to remove axle from tranny?, etc)
