  • KIA Pride 1.3 -- Overall rough idle, stalls on clutch.

    Hi!

It's lovely to see this forum alive and I hope I can get some suggestions/directions and this may be useful to others in the future. <3

I have a 2000 KIA Pride 1.3 (AFAIK the drivetrain, electronics etc, is completely identical between it and Festiva, hence posting here).

The idle is really fine, when the car is cold, but when the car gets to operating temperature, it begins to stall almost all the time I try to downshift for a turn, etc. or make a stop at a traffic light.
If the car is going 50-60 km/h, the moment I press the clutch pedal down sometimes even before I can shift to N, the engine revs just plummet and it stalls. On a rare occasion it doesn't stall, the RPM arrow will almost drop to zero and then it feels like something kicks in to counteract it, pushing revs up to around 600-800, then slowly settling and oscillating around 500 really slowly while I stay at a traffic light. Usually one of the dashboard signs will light up, like the red "OIL sign". On other occasions I had to keep the accelerator slightly pressed while on N, just to keep the engine from stalling. Other than that these stalls, engine runs completely OK.

Another odd thing that has been done on this car and may or may not be relevant, (see Fig 1.) -- one of the tubes that goes to one of sensors has been tied and the sensor has been instead plugged with a screw. The previous owner said that when the tube was connected to the sensor the engine was just going crazy and the car was un-drivable.
Does anyone know what this sensor is and if it can be relevant?

    So far:
    - I've cleaned some of the connectors, including the green one on the passenger side (engine temp iirc, which I thought may help with idle) -- but this had no effect.
    - I also plan to take apart and try to clean the idle solenoid thingy. A lot of people seem to suggest that idle issues could be due to carbon buildup (although then why does it idle just fine when cold?)

Should I test the sensors too? How would you figure out which one works and which one need to be replaced?
Overall I feel stuck with this problem, any suggestions and help are more than welcome!
