  • New Left CV AXLE for Trixie

Today I replaced the original left CV axle in Trixie.
Trixie is my 89 Automatic. She is 37 and has 106,440 miles on her.
The total cost including new CV axle ($36.40 on Amazon), A tool to attach to a slide hammer to go behind the inner joint and transmission ($8.71 on Amazon) and 3 quarts of transmission fluid ($17.85) at Walmart. came to a total of $62.96.
Trixie has the Kia Rio front swap... steering knuckle, hub and strut.

My hearing has gotten pretty bad and I thought I was dealing with a bearing noise in the left front. I had not noticed any clicking when turning.
As soon a I jacked her up and removed the left front wheel I found grease all over the inside of the wheel. The outer boot was split with no grease left in the joint.

Changing the cv axle is much easier than replacing a front wheel bearing any day.
I had trouble popping that axle which had been in the transmission for 37 years, but the tool I bought at amazon and the slide hammer I borrowed from AutoZone made it come out easy.
Hopefully she is now ready for another 37 years and a few hundred thousand miles more.
Working...
