  • Looking to buy festiva 89 carb L model....valve cover smoke

I am looking at this 89 carb festiva.... runs great, only thing is this: the ventilation hose from the valve cover NOT the PCV, but right next to the oil cap, SMOKES (exhaust gas) bad and the guy has disconnected it (supposed to go directly in front of the air cleaner assembly)..... why is this smoking bad? he says it may be a piston ring or something....??? any body else have this issue and what may this be? any help would be great!
    thanks in advance.

excessive crankcase blowby, typically caused by a ring sealing issue.

Could it also be leaky valves?
If the rings are worn there should be white smoke comming out the exhaust when you step on the gas? My '82 Colt did that at 100k km. Mitsubishi engine.
If you pull the PCV valve that hole should smoke too?

white smoke is water/coolant ingestion from a blown head gasket. Poorly sealing valves will cause performance issues, but not generate any smoke. Valve stem seals will cause blue/gray smoke on accel from a stop, but not generate any smoke inside the valve cover. Only a ring sealing issue will generate blowby.

QED test to determine if oil burning is rings or valve stems.....drive under severe load....up a hill and feel for engine response.
If the valves are leaking oil....compression will not necessaryly be lost and engine response shot feel normal. (Valve seats effect conmpression...not...valve stems)
If the rings are shot...the engine will struggle...continuously loose power forcing multiple down shifts.

This is a QED (quick n dirty) test only....should not be used as a replacement for compression or vacuum diagnostics.

For those of you still thinking...I would doubt that it is a combination of valve stems and seats both being shot...this problem tpically has a val;ve tapping associated with it.
