  • tach drops to zero, car dies for a while, somtimes starts...

allright... my 88 just started doing this 2 days ago and now its gotten worse and wont start at all after it dies... ill explain...

it seems to be doing ok, power seems a little weak (but then again ive been driving a 3000gt vr4 for teh past month...) and every now and then the tach will just go to zero, pop back up tp where it was at, go to zero again and then work fine again...

it gets better... for no absolute reason after driving it jsut fine for a while, it dies and doesnt restart for about 20 minutes... until last night that is, now it wont restart at all...

im figureing it must be electrical and has something to do with whatevers causing to tach to go erratic because it seems to have started at the same time...

i replaced the fuel filter thinking it was jsut clogged, the coil is brand new, the wires and plugs are brand new... and when it runs it runs fine... i jsut wanna get the darn thing fixed because i just dropped 1000$ of stereo into the back (Alpine type-X 6.5 compnent system in decklid, 1000W pioneer class D monoamp, and 2 10" sony xplods i got free from a friend, also some infinity 4" up front...)

thing hits hard lol... but it started doing this before i installed the stereo so i know thats not it... any ideas

This sounds like the classic symptoms of a bad ignition module... both domestic GM and Ford cars have similar problems ,, I would suspect your KIA has a similar problem.

would it not start or would it not do anything? when you turn the key do you get nothing or does it turn and not fire?

I had the same problem. These guys told me it was the ignition module inside the distributor and I wouldn't listen. Go to Advance Auto and buy a whole new distributor and be done with it. It's worth the money.
