  • b6t re-ring project

i recently bought a 91 b6t festiva.i am in the southern pa / northern baltimore area and am looking for QUALIFIED help to replace piston rings & re-tune car.i also have a new set of connecting rods & pistons.
this car was bought from a member and HAD a best time @ high 12(on u tube).

IF ANYONE IS MARRIED OUT THERE---PLEASE HELP !!!my wife is on my back to either get it running again...or-i wont even say.

can be driven gently(broken motor mount, pushin oil out top breather & smokes like crazy when not on the gas)but could possible get to somewhere.could possibly trailer if to far. am qualified to remove whole motor & deliver, but have never cracked a motor open.
PLEASE...CAN YOU HELP OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO CAN ?

I can take a delivery....90 miles due east of Harrisburg; however, i cann't commit to alot of time until May or later.
Most importantly...it's best to understand what is acctually wrong with the power plant. Did you do a compression test?
A rebuild streches out when you work on it part time.....especially when machining is required.
Get ahold of a book that covers a rebuild...start reading.

Chances are, your wife is not upset that your working on Your Festiva....she's probalby upset with what your doing or more importantly what your not doing when you not working on the festiva. Or your spending $'s she desires to spend elswhere.

Now...I don't know your wife...but...if she is of that very small percent of wives that are never happy unless their ragging someone or something....there's only one known cure....BUY ANOTHER FESTIVA!

joe, thanks for your input & time....heres what i know-engine runs very well, won't smoke at all when idling or when pushing on the gas-but when i let off the gas the blue-ish oil smoke comes rollin out.when i look under the hood after such a ride.the engine oil has blown back up through the breather/overflow like old faithful.
what i was "told"this translates to is a broken oil ring or several-allowing the oil to be pushed past when the turbo winds up.possibly due to overboosting a couple of runs on u-tube(go to u-tube and type in festiva...page down to @ march '07-festiva vs. crx & the other i think is a mitsu ?)
i was hoping for honing of the cyl only as i have another set of stock bore pistons i want to use out of a miata.
have not done a compression test as i am not qualified nor do i have the equip.i was told i also should have a leak down test as well.
possibly the gentleman from indiana who built & sold me this car will share some insight as he is also a member.
thanks again for any & all help-i think i might be in over my head, but i really want to make this car fly again !! robert

Just a start....burning oil on down throttle....may be a good thing...your sympton likely indicates bad valve guides in the cylinder head. A compression test forst leak down second will possibly showe the rings are good and the problem is in the head. Not to sure of the turbo circuit on the B6T.

Besides the hone...the only other tools required will be a good torque wrench, ring compressor and some good measuring tools.

on deaccelerating? could it be the turbo? vaccum sucking oil thru seals. I don't know too much about turbos, but they do have oil in them I'm fairly sure.
          it runs so sweet

if the bearing seals in the turbo were bad, you'd be seeing blue smoke all the time. oil pressure is always higher than boost pressure and the only time the differential is greater is when there's no boost present i/e: cruise, decel or idle. i would first suspect the exhaust guide seals as those are subject to the most heat and stress, and then the intake seals. but your "old faithful" impression makes me think you have a compression ring or two gone bad, allowing the cylinder pressure into the crankcase and pushing out the only place it can, the breather.

A compression test is VERY simple, and you can get a compression gauge on loan a tool from autozone, shell out $40, do the test, take it back, get your $40 back, and they provide this service to get you to buy your parts there! All you have to be able to do is remove your spark plugs, screw the gauge into wach cylinder(like a plug), tuen the engine over by key until the gauge stops moving, record the psi. Do that for each cylinder, post here, and we can prolly tell ya whats wrong.
Or, buy a haynes manual for $20 for the kind of car the motor came out of, and it will tell all!

                  Festyboy....That is good stuff.
I agree with the potential of a compression ring or two....I just get really cautious when some one goes for the rings and they miss the stuff on top.
