  • front seal

You guys answered my other question, so I have another one, How hard is it to change a front main seal on a 89 model, with auto, if that makes a difference? Thanks

you'll need to remove the timing belt. Other than that, it's not terribly difficult. The hardest part is getting the old seal out. I use a small punch or drill bit, and make a hole in the seal body, out near the outer edge. Put a #6 or #8 sheet metal or wood screw into that hole a few turns, then grab the screw with a pair of cutters, pliers, vicegrips, etc., and pull. Pops right out.

check the crankshaft where the seal rides. it may have a small shallow groove cuy in it if it has a lot of miles on it. you may want to put a seal saver on it also.
mine leaks a little at high rpms. i am going to put one on mine as soon as i find one.
i have 196,000 miles on mine. noticed the leak when i drove it to cailfornia last october.

front seal leaks are very common in festivas i believe. both of ours have leaky front seals. too much hassle for us to deal with. its not like they are leaking a lot. besides, the oil burner with 360k miles burns about a quart every 200 miles, so it wouldn't make much difference.
