Lunging and stalling

Just got it running after about a year. Replaced the cylinder head, new plugs, new battery.

Last week noticed that it would lunge sometimes in 2nd gear. I figured it was the year old gas I had in it and it would run itself out.

This morning it started out fine, got less than 1/2 a mile from home and it started lunging in all gears. In neutral I'll give it gas and it will start to rev up and then start to stall out. Had to ride the clutch all the way home and it took about 10 minutes to go the half mile. I figure my timing got off somehow (I set it 2 weeks ago) but if anybody has any other ideas I'll gladly look into those too. Thanks.

The lunging...sounds like something droping out for more than a split second...in other words...probalbly fuel related and not ignition related. I would start by proving out good fuel, good pump. good filter...ect.

Timing....typically not an erractic problem...it's good or it's bad...not to many cases when it's in between.

the first thing i would do is to change the fuel filter if you have not already did it.

I'd inspect the vacuum hoses.
Does it do this at idle? When you give it gas at idle?

Starts right up and idles fine. Give it some gas to get into first, the engine will rev up to about 2000rpm, and as I push further on the gas the engine just falls down to barely running. I'll try the fuel filter, siphon out the old gas and put in new, and I've already got the carpet up so I'll check in the fuel tank and that fuel screen thing, see what I can find.

Sounds like either a fuel or vacuum issue. I would start by changing the fuel filter, getting good gas then look to see if the carb can be tightened down any, then I'd start replacing vacuum lines. You also need to make sure the choke is working properly.

Some clarification would help....Theris...are you saying all ok while parked up to 2Krpm?

The butterfly on the choke isn't loose and closing when reved by any chance is it?

Here's some clarification. Forget the 2Krom thing. Just went out and it started right up, idles at 1Krpm or less. When I push on the gas it has the opposite effect it should. I push down and the engine starts to die, let off and it idles just fine. About every 5th time I push down on the gas it will rev up to about 4-5Krpm, I let off the gas, push down again and we're back to it almost dieing on me every time.

I haven't been able to change the fuel filter or do anything yet. Got the flu, so I hope to get to it sometime this weekend. Thanks.

Sounds to me like the carb needs rebuilt. Try this, take off the air cleaner, take a rag in your hand and rev the motor up to a high rpm and hold it there. Take the rag and cover the carb untill the engine almost dies (but dont let it die) do this a couple times this will hopfully suck out whatever is clogging up your carb. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. Worth a try

try shutting it down and looking in there and twist the trottle to see if the accelerator pump is working.

With the air cleaner removed does the opening of the carburettor look dirty?
I like to spray mine with carburettor cleaner once a year. Also the external linkages.
Spraying the vacuum hoses with carubrettor cleaner or water mist while the engine is at idle will somtimes reveal a leaky hose connection by a change in idle speed. Problem is trying to spray into tight spaces in the engine compartment.

Today I took off the air cleaner while it was running and it had a very loud sucking noise coming from it. Is it supposed to do that?

Bought the new fuel filter. Will put it on tomorrow.

Put on the new filter and put in new gas. Purrs like a kitten once again. We'll see how long that lasts.
