    Necessary no!
    Smart thing to do, yes.
    What could happen?
Might not be hearing "thunking anymore because you've ground down the balls or the cage and now just a matter of time before they actually fail!
Leaving you stranded somewhere or worst yet cause you to be involved in an "on purpose"!

I agree. Replace the axle. That boot keeps dirt, debri, and water out of the CV joint. My brother didn't change his and fortunately it failed when he pulled into the driveway and not on the highway. He heard a funny noise as he stopped. Got out and found the balls from the CV joint rolling under the car.

Well, folks, I've bought a new car and am getting rid of the ol' Festy. It lived a good life. It's an 89 auto w/ new tires, and a white+tach gauge cluster. ~130k miles, located in NE Ohio. Any offers? $45,999 OBO.

The axle will eventually break, and you will not only need an axle, but you'll have to pay to have it towed as well. I know from experience.
