  • mysterious seal in gasket set...

I got a head gasket set for my B3 and it comes with all the gaskets and seals. I can't figure out where a seal goes, it is 3" in diameter and the cross section of it looks like a "M" when the seal is turned on end (like looking at the wheel of a car in front of you when driving down the road).. i thought it was originally a front crankshaft seal (still may be) but then a guy at the machine shop said it wasn't.... HMMM? maybe throttle body related?..

      ^^yep, Picts Please
Best description would be O.D. (outside diameter) X I.D. (inside diameter) X Thk. (thickness)
Most set always have one or two strays to cover multiple model years/engines

      Just guessing:
      Is it the front camshaft??
What year B3, Multi-port or aspirated? Air intake to throttle body?

What year B3 do you have? I thought there were two different crankshaft seals. Also the early crankshaft seals are the same size as the camshaft seals.

1991 FI automatic.... the camshaft seal is about 1.25" in diameter....this one is different... also, could it be w/ the distributor?

3" inches? my guess would be the rear main seal.

rear main...there is an auminum piece that the gasket pushes into, and that is bolted i believe with 10mm bolts onto the block flywheel side

                      here we go......
It's not a rear main, I have the same one left over in a gasket set I recently purchased (my only guess....some type of dist to head/hsg seal)

Also...this is a rear main looking from the engine side...notice the defined inner lip....rotational seal...previous pict is a compression type.

Heres the rest of the left over's....if anyone's interested...i'll repost in [FS][WTB] Forum...pay by donation.

Carb and what look's like EGR or some exhaust take off.

What the hell is this left over??????

And especially...what the hell are these????

Sorry for focus....I'm trying...but I do not see that well.

I think those plastic sleeves have something to do with installing the valve stem seals... I had a couple of those with my valve stem seal kit but I can't for the life of me remember how you use them. But they aren't supposed to be installed, they're just to help in the installation.
