fuel gauge not working?

what is the procedure to fix a fuel gauge?

I assume you are referring to the 1990 Festiva. It is protocol to list make, year, model etc. Read the sticky for first time posters.

More than likely it is the fuel sending unit, but check your fuses first. It is located in the gas tank. There is an access panel located under the carpet in the cargo are right under the center of the rear seat. Easiest to get to it if you remove the bolts and nuts to rear seat and fold it up out of the way. You will have to pry all the plugs up that hold the two sections of carpet together.

Once you move the carpet out of the way the access panel will be clearly visible. Remove panel. The fuel pump housing will then exposed. Disconnect electrical. Clean dirt off from housing and area close by. Remove the fuel lines and screws. The sending unit is attached to the float.
