  • 1st gear synchro

    Doods,

I have a friend with an 88 Festiva with the 5spd manual. He thinks the 1st gear synchro is bad because he can only get it into gear by double clutching. I told him that I think that tranny is NOT fully synchronized like a lot of trannies from that era. Does the 5spd Festiva have a 1st gear synchro? Any hellp appreciated.

The tranny IS fully synchronized. Could be a bad synchro, or a mal-adjusted clutch. You have to go back pretty far to find non-synchronized transmissions. My 72 MG Midget does not have a synchronized 1st gear, but all the other gears are. MGAs are also have non-synced 1st gears. Those are the only cars that I have driven that are not fully synced. I've driven 50's and 60's vintage American vehicles and those were fully synced.

yup, most transmissions became fully syncronised in the mid '60's. My 64 1/2 Mustang with a 170 straight 6 has a non-synchro 1st, but my 67 Stang conv with a 200 straight 6 has the RAN/RAT fully synchro'd 3 speed.
