Dist. on a 88 festiva

on the outside body on the distributer, is a small black box looking thing with one wire running to the positive side of the coil. is this some kind of a electronic capacitor? if so can it be replaced with a regular type of capacitor like the kind found on older cars with point distributors?does anyone know if it is necessary for the car to run right?
this is on a 1988 l festiva.

yup, its a cap. no, its not the 2.2mF that was on points. IIRC, it's a bit lower. car should run fine without it, but you may have ignition noise on the radio. you can try a points condensor, or just snatch a condensor off of a newer Ford's coilpack, next time you're at a boneyard.
