  • Strut Mounts

I'm just curious if anyone has gone to change their front struts and actually found that they needed new mounts due to the old ones being worn.
I'll be changing my springs/struts (going to sport springs) all the way around on my '91 L and I don't want to have to buy something extra that's not needed.

Oh oh and is there any possibility that worn mounts could lead to play in the struts causing a knock?

    Yes and Yes

I always recommend new mounts to my customers, and do not charge extra, even labor, to do them, it is just such a great idea.....

The strut mounts that came off my autocross car were SOFT and WORN with capitol letters....

I didn't hear a knock, but they definitely deformed under load... heck they deformed under the weight of the car

Changing the strut without change the mount is like changing the oil without changing the filter. I think you'll find it is the smart thing to do - especially since it is so easy to do while you change the strut.
Strut mounts are a wear item just like struts themselves and sway bar bushings - Very seldom results in catastrophic problems but help contrbute to an undesirable condition of the car when left unattended to.

I did not change my mounts when i changed my struts, why a strut mount costs as much as a strut is beyond me.

has anyone just replaced the insert? For the front their only $15, as apposed to like $50 for the whole mount. Mounts for the rear are like $25, but that still seems mighty expensive.

OK, so I'm looking over some stuff here...

Might seem like another silly question to you guys,
but do you have to change strut boots when you change struts?

                And what are strut bellows?

The strut boots on the front are usually reusable but the one on the back are usually junk. You may have to buy some universal boots for the back and retro fit them if you cant find the right ones.
