  • Clutch Woes

I bought my new 97 aspire for $500 needing a clutch. I put a clutch kit in it and it still slipped. So I bought a new flywheel, installed it and cleaned everything with brake cleaner and didn't so much as even touch the surfaces. Made sure the clutch was in the right way as well. Still slips badly.

    Any suggestions?

Did you put the throw out bearing on the clutch fork or did you just drop the bearing down over the shaft housing? If you just dropped it down over the shaft housing, you wouldn't get enough free travel when you bolted the transaxle tight to the engine. The fork would be behind the throw out bearing and would start to disengage the clutch as you tighten the transaxle to the engine. The only other reason could be if you don't have the cable adjusted correctly.
    You gonna race that thing?

Well I did seat the throwout bearing properly and the cable is adjusted to spec, it turns out that there is pressure being blown through the exhaust and I just noticed that there is white smoke and some water coming out of the tail pipe. The "slipping" sound is actually my compression literally going down the tubes. Any one know of a good place to get a head gasket set cheap and fast?

Well turns out the whole time my clutch never slipped, my muffler was clogged and whistling, which sounded like slipping. $500 car because of that, in immaculate condition!

Eh, takes about an hours worth of beer to pull and replace the trans with a new clutch, so you got yourself an exscuse to drink a few beers while playing with, and getting to know, your new car, which just happens to be the greatest car evah made!

Well I don't think many of the members would agree with you, I have an aspire, and in my opinion festymick's car is the greatest festiva/aspire ever.

I don't drink, so the beer thing doesn't really apply. But it got pretty easy after the second time with this car.

I like the aspire, and festymicks car isn't a car anymore, it is a freaking genius work of art!

But I do think most members of FF.com would agree with me, Festy/aspire is a freaking great one!

Good to know it got easier, by the 2nd time you are an old hand at it, I bet!
