  • well i really did it now!?!

i've had a noise in or behind my speedometer, so today (at the suggestion of ff.com members) i tried to put some liquid graphite in the cable. it didn't seem to help. i tried a couple times and even switched out the speed-o, but it still makes the noise......but thats not the BIG problem.

i stripped out the hole that the 10 mm bolt goes into to hold the cable in to the tranny. the one that you use to check and fill you trans fluid. i'm not sure what to do, i'm afraid it will come out. is there anyway to fix this or replace the area, with out replacing the whole trans?

i hate it when one small problem become a a much larger problem!

the "tab" thing the bolt goes through on the cable is broke on my car, so i don't even have a bolt in place and it's been like that for 6 months now and no issues

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

same here. no tab. no problem. maybe you can fit a little beam clamp or C-clamp to hold it if you're worried.

so it's not just going to fall, or fly out, i'd hate for it to come out and i lose tranny fluid all over. it sucks cause my speedo is still makeing noise. dumb

Cubstiva, I did the same thing, to my tranny, and here's what I did to fix it: Get a small piece of solder (any kind will do) form a small "L" or a "U", depending on the thickness of the solder, and insert it into the threaded hold on your tranny (I left a little bit hanging out, so I was sure that it did not just fall in the hole)...

As you insert the hold-down bold for the speedo cable, the solder (made of lead) will fill-in the stripped threads. Don't over tighten this time...

I did this on mine, and it works great.

            Good luck!

            Cheers,

            Scott

I never had much luck with the graphite .

I pulled my cable out and used a moly lube , and sprayed the cable itself , after I wiped it off clean .
then re-inserted it into the housing .
If you do not want to tap it , you may be able to get a different pitch thread or a standard thread to go in there , being the one now is stripped .

i believe that grease gets dried up in there. then its this hard almost plastic that screeches against the cable. on my dads car he squirted oil up around the cable and that old grease came out. no more problems.
