  • Transmission Question....

    Hello all,

Been calling around today to salvage yard trying to find a 5 speed. Some of these salvage yards are asking if I have a 3 bolt or 4 bolt... what is this pertaining to and how do I find out?

What bolt pattern they are speaking of? Need an answer ASAP so I can try to hunt down a 5 speed! Help a new clueless festy owner out.

    Gabe

I think they may be talking about the front trans mount, festivas have four and aspires have three. the gear ration is also different
    it runs so sweet

Yea I called one salvage yard and they asked if I had a 3 or 4 bolt mount and another yard asked if I had a 3 or 4 bolt starter. I was thorougly confused then...

        Crap

Well I picked up the transmission today. It was covered in muck... I brought it to the power washer and hit it with degreaser twice... then power washed.... and its still not close to clean.

Nervous about something. I saw the car this transmission came out of. It wasn't an aspire hehe. Is the mount shown below suppose to be 3 bolt? Is this the right tranny?

Also when I dumped it on its side it puked something other then transmission fluid. Looked like gear fluid to me... hmm, let me know guys if you see something not right here...

I belive the fluid in the trans from the factorie is clear to very light brown, once changed should be red in color.

specs say dexron/mercon transmission fluid should be used

some people here have used 80w90 and have had no trouble with it

When I bought mine, brand spanking, it came with 80w90w. I believe ford later decided ATF should be used, so this may have had factory fluid in it, or someone like me owned it who stayed with the heavier oil. Me, I have about 350k on this tranny, new 80w90w once a year,or so no problems. The idea with the ATF is that it can get into the tighter spaces inside easier. With my driving style, I burn trannys up on the other cars I have owned way to easily, and I want something a lil bit thicker than atf to take the abuse I dish out(apparently).

              IMO, stay with gear oil....

Ford says use ATF, and they have all the scientists, and techs that should be wayyyy smarter than me, BUT......

They did discontinue making the festiva, they should have listened to me on that one.....

Oh yeah, no one asked me 3 or 4 bolt when I was looking for mine, are they implying the engine mount, or something else? Now car-parts has the same criteria, maybe it is aspire related? When I was looking for mine, I was told that the aspire dog just would not hunt.....Now i know that is not strictly true...

I am not positive but I believe that the mount is differant from one to the other but it is still usable so long as you have the right mount for the tranny...others can answer better maybe.

fordfest78...do you or did the JY have a dowel or part of an axel or something in the axel inlet in the tranny? If not things may have shifted in there and require repair before you are able to use the tranny.

I have seen that a bunch in the last year or so, TSB's and such. You are supposed to use the dowel, or whatever, to hold the spider gears in place. I have NEVER done it before last july, and never had a problem. As soon as I read it in an escort TSB, I started doing it in all FWD trans I do just to be safe. Has anyone actually had a problem with this? Just curious...

When I picked it up there was rags stuffes inside the holes. I took them out put something more waterproof in there before i power washed it. Then suspecting i may have got some water in I pulled out the rags and hit it up with some wd 40. I never heard of having issues from not having the CV shafts in the transmission. Where it sits right now there is no dowels in the trans its just open.

Hmm, guess Im gonna find out huh?

I would not sweat the H20...Roll it around to drain as much as you can. After you put some miles on and do a refill. What water didn't steam out, will have settle to the bottom and will drain out. If the ATF comes out 'milky', Put some more cheap ATF in, not synthetic, run a few more miles and redrain.

You all have me freaking out right now. I have put a lot of time into my 5speed swap and did not put anything in the gears. If I get it all together and it don't work............ :violent3:
