  • Help with fuel problem

I have a 91 Festiva 1.3 injection and the fuel pump died, with it seems the ecm . I have checked up to the fuel relay (Working back from the fuel pump) and I don't get any power along the lines, I really want to get it going again soon. Any help would be great thanks,
    Madmini

I still need to get hold of a new fuel pump but I can't justify $300 from Canadian tire If you could help with that also thnx

Did you trip the fuel cut off, underneath the driverside rear speaker cover near the strut tower?
Think it is a red button!

The fule pump is energized by a relay and the relay can be only energized whe:
        1) when the car is being started (key in sart position)
        2) After the car has been sarted and is running with suffucuaent air flow (VAF is openend)
        3) The fuel pump test jemper has nbeen installed.
If non of these are true at the time of you volt meter readings, yor measurements are not correct or something elese is wrong.
It might not be the fuel pump, it might be the relay, or the relay circuits.

Great info posted by jglutz, just follow the directions these folks offer on here, they got me up and running when I had the same problem with my '93 Festiva GL 1.3L, if they hadn't passed the info about the fuel pump test jumper and VAF switch I would have been pulling my hair out trying to find my fuel supply problem.

If it ends up being a fuel pump I got mine off E-bay for $36 plus shipping and it has a 1 year warranty.

I don't know if it would be cheaper or not, but rockauto.com USUALLY is a good bit cheaper than canadian tire. Hey your from Saskatchewan? my festy is from Merlin saskatoon

Well I tested the jumper and I got nothing so onto the second plan of attack, There is a carb version of the festiva in my town in a junkyard, So Im off to do a conversion.

If you installed the fuel pump jumper with the key in the RUN position and nothing.....two more test before replacing the fuel pump.
Find the fuel pump relay, behinf the front left speaker.
1st) Remove the relay, check for 12VDC between the Black w/ red trace wire at the relay and black wire at the relay while trying to start the car.
Repaet the test for the Yellow w/ black trace wire and the black wire. Clutch in for MTX and Park/Nuetral req'd for ATX. Both test should yeild 12VDC, if not, wiring or fuse problems exist prior to the relay. It's not a relay or pump problem.
2nd) With the key in the on/run position, at the relay, jump the yel/blk tr wire to the blk wire, Then jump the yel/blk tr wire to chassis ground. In both case, you should hear the pump come on, if yes to both, relace the relay. If off when jumped to blk and on when jumped to chassis, its a bad ground. If not on in either case, it's the fuel pump.

                    Hope this helps.

IMO, I would not replace a EFI with a carb, although the carby should get better gas mileage. Joe knows what he is talking about, follow through, and be patient, it takes a while to diagnose something over the net that some of us could figger out in about 1/2 an hour if we were actually there.
