  • New to festiva, Front end noise.

Hey all , 93 festiva here with 5 speed trany is very smooth trough all 5 gears . Very slight clicking hard left and right. The front drivetrain makes a low rumble sound that gets louder from 1st gear on up through 5th. could this be cv joints or axels . Seems to turn and drive smooth . If it is axels where can they be had. Thanks all.

The clicking is usually a worn CV joint.

The low rumble could be a wheel bearing.

You can buy rebuilt axles at just about any auto parts store. Last time I bought one it was around $60.

You can also buy the wheel bearings at an auto parts store. On Festivas, the rears are easy and straight forward. The fronts are a bit trickier, but doable.

^^+1 on the clicking. Most likely CVs, which can be ordered at pretty much any parts place. The rumbling, could be the bearings, could also be worn tires, not sure what kind of shape they are in.

I had to get mine pressed when I did it.

You can buy halfshafts at any major auto parts store. About $100-125 with core exchange. I agree the roaring is probably wheel bearings.

A press is handy for the fronts, but not required. If mine ever go out, I'm going to write up a procedure on how to do them. But that could be a while.

I had a chance to lift the car today. checked both front wheels for play , they seem very good. Cv joints are also tight. The pass side axle had a rubber and steel ring on it that had come loose, I figure its some sort of balancer, it got cut off. The trans seals on both side are leaking and the drivers side input shaft seems to have a bit more play than the other. Could a trans input shaft make this type of rumble.

Is possible trans is making noise, but my bet is on the rear bearings.
In the festiva the rear bearing seems to go bad much quicker than the fronts.
You don't say how many miles you have on it, and may not matter depending upon how well/poor it was maintained.
In my experience it is very difficult to tell by sound which bearings are going unless you are very close to complete failure.
Some times you can determine it from how hot the wheel is near the bearing.
But best is to jack it up and to the 9 -3 and 6-12 wobble/play test.

i did the wobble test on the front wheels and they seemed ok . I did not check the back because the rumble seems to be from front.

Does it get louder when you are in a curve or breaking ?
