  • When good carbs go bad.

I am really curious about what causes carbed festivas to begin having idle/running problems around 160-175K miles. Mine did this. Started as a refusal to remain running on startup and progressed from there. Have looked at 2 or 3 carbed festivas on Ebay lately that all seem to have developed this problem as well. With mileage on them averaging 165K. They all seem to be in the beginning stages, whereas mine progressed to refusing to run at all unless I was on the gas all the time. Just really would like to know what causes this. In mine, virtually everything was changed except the computer. Anybody have any ideas? Cause I'm leaning hard toward snagging another carbed festiva just to tinker and see if I can figure this out.

My engine only has 106K km on it.
Most problems so far have been with ignition components.
    What diagnostics have you done?

mine has 203,000 on it and the carb has never been touched runs as good as it did from day one.as WmWatt said, the only problems i have had are a very few ignition problems.
mine gave problems one time , sort of like yours and it was the ignition module bad.

Well, I don't have the car anymore, to diagnostics are no longer being done. Can tell you that I changed the ignition module and this made no difference. Just seem to be quite a few that develop a similar problem around the same mileage.

it depends on the fuel thats been runnin through the carb, some carbs do need rebuildin after 150K or so, rubber doesnt always last that long, so price up a rebuild kit, if u have more problems with ur carbs in the future, if u get another one

Interesting. The only problem mine has had (88 L+, 199,xxx miles) is that two years ago it became very hard to start. turned out the choke was sticking, so cleaned and adjusted it etc. Also, it seems to have a small dead spot on acceleration at around 2000 rpm, not much, just a very small stumble that i can feel. Other than that runs great!!

My 88 L 170,000 idles real rough. I have since turned it into a parts car. It smells like some wire melted somewhere. I can smell the stench every time I open the door.
