  • Push button ignition?

Anyone every do this? Or with a toggle switch?

My Festiva's ignition key switch broke (a problem that started 3 years ago when some kids tried to steal it out of the yard I pulled it from by jamming a screwdriver into it).

I thought about just installing a couple toggle switches or pushbuttons in a discreet place to start the car up. Has anyone else done this, or have a diagram how to do it?

Use a "momentary switch",, one wire to battery, one to starter, unless someone here knows the two wires in ignition switch to tap into,,have done it, on my corolla.......I would turn the key to ON (not start) then hit the button....

i have a start botton, but you have to have the key in it to start it. i think if you had one switch to turn on everything, it would fry. i would have a solenoid activated by a switch. that way you can have alot more currrent.

used to have it on my taurus, the park/neutral safety switch was screwed up on the trans so I had to cut the key to the "run" position and I had a pushbutton switch wired to the starter to actually crank it... also had a switch wired to the cooling fan cause that didn't work either, lol
        No festiva for me ATM...

Why not just replace the ignition switch? Place a want ad in the for sale section for one.

For the past like 5 years I've just been using a $20 ignition switch that I wired up myself.

That's probably what I'll end up doing. I just have a bucket full of electrical switches and if I could get it wired up with one this weekend, that's what I was going to do. I thought about maintained switches for the ACC and ON, and then a momentary for the start.

I'll have to wait on the replacement ignition switch, though, so more down time for the Festiva.

Can I get it off without removing the column?

Here is how i did mine on the DeathEgg,,,it's a simple momentary pushbutton with a rubber cover. don't really need it since the ignition switch works fine, but it's fun to use sometimes.[/img]

                    Deathegg,

Which wires did you connect to the pushbutton from the ignition switch?

                    Thanks

interesting; the move to the new format (which is really nice btw) erased my answer which i posted yesterday! oh well....
So to answer your question, I just ran one wire to the battery and one to the starter; very simple. Keep in mind that i used a heavy duty switch with the appropriate gauge wiring to do this.

I put a two switch unit in my friends car last year. All I did was get the switch from radio shack ($2.75 US) and then cut the ignition out of the car. Then I hooked up the four wires (posi, neg and starter) with quick connects and pluged them into the switch. When you flick the first switch it powers the car and the second spins the starter. I can't remember what the wire colors coordinate to but it's on the net if not this board. Hope that helps.

                        I Found this just now!

                        Starter white/pink

                        Ignition red/lt. green

It's better to go through the starter relay, so you don't have all that current running in a switch on your dash. Just grab the wiring diagram and snatch the original wires from the ignition switch, I did this with my Bimmer.. I used the unused foglight switch for the power, and a momentary switch from the hardware store for the starter relay.. it's all Aston Martin and stuff... LOL... works well though, and noone would figure out how to start my car to steal it... well, until they read this though... LOL...
