  • smoking after sitting

Hey guys, need some help here.
My 88 festy (L+, carb, 4-speed, 200k) is smoking a little! I have been having to let it sit while i get a new gas tank, so i'm using another car. It's been sitting not running for about a week. Today i started it up, and smoked a bit, took it for a very small drive around the block and it seemed to not smoke so much. This concerns me because later in the week after i get my tank put in i have to get the CA smog test done, which i hear is very strict.
Just the valve seals leaking into the combustion chamber? I was wondering if for the smog test if i used some STP or something to thicken the oil a bit? I'll be driving it alot on Friday to test the new tank, etc, so maybe if i just use it like normal it wont do it.
Any hints on passing CA smog would help too!
    Thanks,
    mark

I'm not familiar with the CA test....but what will help with any test is a hot engine....make sure the engine is not cold for the test...take a long drive on the way to the test to burn off any residual. Or add some alcohol to the gas to help dilute the emissions.

Form the symptons you described...oil at startup and wuickly goes away...could very well be valve stem seals. STP...put it in...cann't hurt...if you stop burng oil on a cold start...should help witha the smog test.

The emission centres around here tell you to run the engine for 20 min before brining it in for a test. I take a quick jaunt up the freeway. I also clean the spark plugs and ignition wires.
