  • What would you do? New/old engine.

I have a low milage (121K) but unknown B3 engine (block/head) to put in my Festiva.

Question is what would you do to it before it's installed?

    My list includes:

    Oil pan/valve cover gaskets.

    Front/rear oil seals with sleaves.

    Valve steams.

    Headgasket.

    Timing belt.

Does anyone have brand name or part numbers?

    Thanks

    David

I would NOT touch that oil pan gasket unless I had to. They are a pain. Gasket wise, you got your choice of any premium set. They are not exactly cheap though. If you are going that deep, you might as well get a complete rebuild set. At least you would get that bypass O ring you can't get any other way. I kinda like the Fel Pro kit myself, but others may have a cheaper alternative they have had sucess with. I also like to reuse the factory metal intake and exhaust gaskets though too. They have NEVER leaked, which is more than I can say for any economy or premium ones I have used before.

^^ X2....I'm for buying gaskets sets and changing as much as you can.

Also, while the head is off, might want consider havint the valve and seat ground or cleaned up.

Might want to change water pump while your at it.

This past October I spent about $200 for complete upper and complete lower gasket set from NAPA. Everything but bearings, rings and core plugs.

Since when was it a PAIN to change the oil pan gasket with the enging out of the car???

I would take the head to a machine shop and at least have it pressure and vacuum checked and the head gasket surface milled.

I didn't have any luck engine out or in,premium gasket set or cheepo. These were all on early engines. I began to question if the crank change had something to do with it. The steel factory intake and exhaust gaskets always astounded me as to their durability.
