What would you do to AC while engine is out?

    What would you do to AC while engine is out?

    I have to put freon in every spring. Then it will last till fall.

    Think I will take the car to an AC shop. And pay to have them tell me were it is leaking (compressior).

    Question is what else would you do to the AC system while the engine/trans is out?

    It sounds to me like the front seal in the compressor. Why pay to have them check it? That is the only place any of mine have leaked too, so just get a rebuilt one to put back in when the engine goes back. Evacuate the system with a vacuum pump after you install it, Harbor freight runs them on special cheap, then put a refill kit to it. Kits are about the cheapest way to go, and you get all you need to do the job with them @ about 35.00. I cheat.... we still have all our old A/C equipment at the shop from where we quit doing it a few years back.

      Lately there have been a pile of rebuilt/new compressors on ebay.
      89SX funtop! Fully loaded!

        Oh, almost forgot..... make sure which compressor you have. 3 common types
        Factory bolts in from sides
        Dealer install bolts in from front
        aftermarket usually has both high and low pressure fittings on the compressor itself. These can be a little more interesting to find, but are a Sanden unit that was fairly common in aftermrket kits for many cars.

          Two years ago, I purchased a '96 Escort, it was dripping tracer fluid from the compressor. I evacuated the system and dumped in a can of the stops leak stuff ($15 AZ) and topped it off with R122. Running fine since. I would give it a shot before opening the circuit.

          I have never seen a Festive AC circuit...But if the circuit joints are flare/compression...it would be a good idea to check that they tite.

          R12 systems are notorious for leaks....some early R122 are not much better....it's not a bad idea to run the AC once a week in an older car to keep the seals wet and prevent them from drying out.

            I still have the original charge on the 93 Taurus. Never topped off, still R12. 132 leaks more IMO. GMs however were a profit center for us for YEARS! None of mine have flare fittings, including Curmudeons strange aftermarket add on air. O rings on all I have seen. Anyone else?

                I have an A/c compressor if you need one. It's one that bolts from the side of the compressor.
