  • Stumbling/stuttering

Alright here goes. Driving my car(88 carbed) it idles alright a little high when cold but when driving it seems to be stuttering under load. when at cruising speed everything seems fine but if you try to accelerate it sputters.

When does it stutter? At a certain RPM or speed? In a certain gear?
If it has boobs or wheels, sooner or later you're going to have trouble with it.

Goes through 1st and second pretty good anything above that it stutters. example= If you are in 5th cruising at 55 and try to accellerate it will sputter and what not if you down shift to 4th it will gain speed then shift back to 5th it will hold speed but not gain any.

mine did that and a new distributor cap and rotor cured it.your problem sounds electrical and if its been a while since you have changed the cap , rotor, wires and possibly the plugs, it might be time to do it now,

I plan on doing them but cant get a rotor till monday it has to be ordered. I was thinking fuel related problem but we will see what happens.
Also read something about maybe the cat being plugged how would i check that

I second the plug and wire check. At least check the gap. It's easy and free.

I'm fighting a similar problem with my 89 carb'd. I believe I have it isolated to the distributor as it misses and stubles while cruising around 2k rpm but is actually fine under load. This problem only happens when the emissions are in closed-loop after the car is warmed up. My issue may be vacuum advance related since my lower of the dual chamber vacuum units is not holding air. You may have the same problem but possibly your upper chamber is leaking? You would need a vacuum gauge to test the unit.

good luck and keep us informed if you do find the fix. Thanks!

The vaccum advance is the round thing on the side of your distributor.

everything seems to be good now. I am thinking it was just a moisture issue due to alot of driving in rain and snow over the last couple days.
