  • valves & camshaft interchange

I'm working on a '95 aspire 1.3, doing the head @ the house, and don't like the looks of some of the valves and the cam is scored where the front seal is. I have a '91 festive 1.3 and am thinking the valves and cam are interchangable. If not where is a good place to get these parts? Any help out there. Thanks Jody

You will have to look at the valve train after you remove the valve cover, or look to see what type pulleys are on the front of the engines. Both are 1.3 B3s, but somewhere in that time frame, the crank was changed, and they went from mechanical lifters, to hydraulic types. Are you familiar with what each looks like?

m715, i believe you meant to say the cam was changed, not the crank.

The way i understand it is that some older festiva's had solid adjustor's, then I think when they switched to FI they changed to HLA's (cams remained the same). Aspires should all have HLA's, but the aspire have roller rockers, which require a different cam. But I *think* if you use the festiva rockers (hydraulic or non doesn't matter) with the festiva cam you should be fine, but you can't use the festiva rockers with the aspire cam.

Basically: if you use the rockers and cam from the festiva you should be alright.

Valves should be the same across the board, but new ones are only a few $ a piece from rockauto.com, so unless the ones in your festy are in real good shape you might be better just getting new ones.

Thnx Michael, Mechanical lifters are solid where-as the hydraulic types have oil ports and is spring loaded. Please correct me if that is wrong. I did get the valve cover off and noticed that the rocker arms have springs where-as the '95 has spacers. I'd almost rather have new in there but got to do what I can afford. Thanks Jody

Taking used valves out of one head and putting them into another used head.....ummm...will take some lapping of the seats at a minimum or having the valves and seats ground.

If the valves in the Aspire are shot...the stem guides are probalbly also shot...might be good idea to measure them.

Just a clarification....there are no lifters in the B3....the device on the rocker opposite the cam is the lash adjuster....some of the lash adjusters are mechanical....some are hydraulic. The part of the rocker that contacts the cam is called a follower.

FYI I have Aspire roller rocker on my stock B3 festiva engine,I have put over 5000 miles on engine since the swap over pulled the valve cover everything still ok.

There are 2 different crankshafts also. They changed over in the 1991 models, no real way by build to tell which was put in which. A pizza delivery fleet here had 18 1991 Festivas for many years, and some had the early engine which had mechanical adjustment rocker arms, some had the follower type Joe spoke of. I have seen guys here on the forum, and elsewhere call the latter everything from "roller cams" to Hydraulic lifters" etc.

You may want to talk to or message Jim (FB71) about those roller rockers on a festy cam. That very question came up at our recent DJ meet , Festyboy was running them and wiped out the cam I think...Jim was saying that the combo is not compatible for long I believe.

When installing them if you don't make sure the oil holes are lined up you will wipe out the cam, like I said after 5000 miles no wear or any other problems!
