1989 Festiva L, 2 door, a/c, automatic. Starts easily, but dies when you put it in gear from idle, or if you slow down for a stop sign or to make a turn. Runs great the rest of the time. Replaced plugs, plug wires, muffler and fuel filter. Any advice greatly welcome.

Can you check the idle speed? Need a tachometer to do that. Some mechanics just turn the while idle screw on the back of the carburettor (you do have the carburettor model, no?) to increase the idle speed so it doesn't stall.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.

On top of the throttle body, there is a black rubber plug. Pull it off, and inside is the air bleed screw to adjust the idle up. Try adjusting that up a bit.

Does it start and idle well in park? Very important to know!
If so...most likely its the park nuetral switch on the tranny. There are a bunch of input signals to the ECU that adjust the idle to compenstae for extra loads on the engine at idle...for example...AC...headlights...rad fan...comfort fan...AND...the transmission not being in park or neutral. When the car is in gear...the torque converter is and extra load that the idle must compensate for so the engine does not stall out.
The park neutral switch is located on the transmission case...simplest failure...the connector fell off. Sorry, I'm not the owner of an ATX...not sure where the switch is located on the transmission...but I know its there.Joe Lutz

I've seen problems like this before.. not in rice burners though... my friend has a voyager with the exact same problem, if you rev your motor up a little bit before u change gears it should allow you to get rolling without stalling. but have fun switching to neutral for turns..
The timing is the cause in his van, if it isn't NPS then maybe it wouldnt hurt to look into your timing.Proud owner of 92L, 350KM, Home made muffler, sounds like a truck! 16 years without replacement of anything but filters! 5spd EFI, Anyone else's shifter look like its from a quarter-ton?
