  • Timing Belt -Original Make?

    Hello Folks.
    '96 Aspire, 160 K Km.

    The timing belt is labelled : " Gates , Made in Korea "
    Is this belt factory original?
    It appears to be in good shape.
    I'm wondering if belt has been replaced.

    Thanks,
    -JS

    If you can read anything on it most likely it's not the original. I think the original has a brand name that starts with S.. but it's been a while.

      Yes, i believe that Gates is not an OEM supplier, just for the aftermarket replacement. But DAMN they make good belts if mine is anything to go by; 30k OVER the replacement interval and didn't break.
      imo just replace yours if not sure about the age.
      If it has boobs or wheels, sooner or later you're going to have trouble with it.

        I have the original timing belt off my Festiva.
        It has the following written on it:
        047 ||
        B63012205E DO NOT CRIMP INTTA Power Grip MADE IN JAPAN 107Y216 048 8-48 ||
        049 ||

        The replacement belt I bought for $35 CDN and installed on 06Apr01 at 94,150 km is on the car now so I can't say what's written on it. I still have the box it came in which says "CAM DRIVE BELT PB-551-5" with a distributor's sticker which says "CD-141 made in U.S.A" and universal product bar code "0 37256 3746 7". I must have got it at Canadian Tire because it has a sticker with their code 17-1227-8 on it. No manufacturer's name anywhere.
