  • Clutch and flywheel questions.

    Alright,
I am in the middle of fixing up an Aspire FI engine and 5 speed to go in the Festiva.
I am looking at getting one of the Exedy clutches of of Ebay. How have these clutches held up for people? It's going to have very normal commuting use with a little lead foot occasionally on the back roads.

    Flywheels:
What is the advantage to having a flywheel lightened for nornal daily use. I am looking for MPG out of this car. I am not going to do any major engine mods with this one.
The fly wheel is glazed so I have to at least sand it down. I don't plan to take it to a shop unless it would be a good idea to take a little metal off also.

I've had 2 or 3 Excedy clutches without any problems. But like any part if you abuse it, you are going to have trouble.

I wouldn't lighten the flywheel in your situation. You don't want to lose any of the spinning weight that helps get you rolling from a stop. If your flywheel face is glazed, I would take it to a machine shop and have them clean it up. You won't regret it.
    You gonna race that thing?

What advantages to you get from lightening the flywheel?

A lighter flywheel will let the engine rev up and down faster. It's good for a bit faster acceleration and it makes rev matching easier. The downside is that lower inertia means it's more difficult to be smooth in gear changes and accelerating from a light requires slipping the clutch more.

          Wow!!!!

Also...does not dampen the crank as well....to much weight reduction may make the engine fell a little rougher.
