  • Dumb question...

So far, my attempt at installing A/C in my Festiva has gone without a hitch - I was able to do the entire interior conversion and the engine wiring in one evening. Now I have a problem, probably a very stupid one. The bolts for the compressor mounting plate will NOT go into their holes on the engine block. I know they're the right size as they came off another Festiva's mounting plate. I suspect 16 years' worth of oil and crap have gotten into the holes and made it impossible to put bolts in. What should I do? I'm not a mechanic and I have no clue.

    Any help is appreciated!

Get a metric tap that is the correct size for your bolts and run it in and out of the holes. If the holes were tapped originally, this should clean them up.

      Thanks!

Where would I find one, and what would it cost me?

You could try an auto parts store or a hardware store. We have an extensively stocked hardware store where I live that would have them. An individual tap would probably be around 3 or 4 dollars. I picked up a whole set of metric tap and dies locally from one of those "Surplus Stores" for $20.
They are the cheap imported kind, but they are good enough to chase pre-existing threads.

This thread's been dead for 2 years!

I don't even have this car anymore! But 2 years later the A/C still works...

Anyhow, be sure to read my articles in the "Others' Articles" section. I did a writeup on A/C removal and installation.
