  • Manual Stock Shifter Knob

Ok, I know this sounds like a minor problem but I need to fix this to pass state inspection. The gear pattern eblem came off my shifter knob and need to glue it back on. What kind of glue can be used to glue it back on that will work? Or is there some other shifter knob that will screw on to the stock shifter with the same gear pattern? (ie escort, tracer, mazda, kia, etc.)

WOW, I appreciate a state that makes people keep "crap" off the road and makes people keep their cars in "good" working order, but that's the kind of crap that makes me happy I live in a state that doesn't have those requirements.

Sorry that I don't know the answer to your question though.

      Most of those will fit.
So I guess a custom smooth knob like Brian's is out?

Just tape it on there and see what they say.

Just about every Festiva I've ever seen is missing the shifter pattern.

Mine isn't missing, but you can't read it either.....
WHY do you have to have that emblem? Did they fail you for it? NC has state insp, but they don't care about that, but I do miss FL with no state INSP......
However, a tail light or tag light, or headlight out can get you pulled multiple times in ONE night, whereas here, I know people who drive around for MOTHS with a headlight out and never get pulled over, huh...

Yeah, The State of NJ says the transmission pattern must be shown, or they will fail you.

I once owned a 74 Ford Ranchero,(automatic) and had to re-adust the linkage because Ford claimed that if you put the car in park with the car running and got out and slammed the door the car could go into reverse and could possibily run someone over. Ford mail out warning stickers to everyone who owned Fords with this transmission problem. These stickers were to be place on your dash board. When my tranny went bad, I had a new one installed, the mechanic adjusted the linkage so it would not jump into reverse. The problem with this was that to be in drive(D) you had to put the lever into (L2). wouldn't you know it, went to inspection and they failed me for that. I argued with them but got no where. I had to adjust it back before they would pass it. After they passed it I re-adjusted it back so it wouldn't jump into reverse. I guess it was more important for the trans. indicator to be right, than for someone to get seriously hurt or killed. Some State Laws just don't make sense.

new jersy wants it on there so if the state impounds it or if it's stolen, the thieves will not hurt themselves or get caught, by taking to much time to figure out the gear pattern and making their get away.

that is the stupidest reason i've ever heard of for failing a SI. you should put a vw knob on the shifter to see if all they check for is the indicator or if it has to actually be correct

A stock Mazda Miata knob will screw right on with the correct pattern too (if you have a 5-speed) and the pattern in molded into the knob so it won't come off. I got mine for ten bucks on ebay.

I have not seen a safety checklist anywhere in the US or Canada that does NOT include this detail.
Use a dab of silicone or gasket maker and you should be fine

Geeez, i thought PA was tough! checked the PA inspection checklist and nothing is mentioned of the shift knob. NJ is harsh!
Of course, here in CA, no annual inspection (smog every 2 years usually), so even with my bad brakes etc i'm ok.... of course when i move back to PA i'm screwed,,,,,
If it has boobs or wheels, sooner or later you're going to have trouble with it.

don't think theres anything like that in VA...

Aspire, mazda, maybe even escort ?, knobs should work. Civic (at least the earlier ones) should work too, b/c the festy knob screws right onto the civic short shifter.

I used the knob from a 1987 Honda Accord in my last Festiva. It fit perfectly and actually looked pretty good too.
