I just got the air conditioning working in my '89 LX! My question is, is it normal for the compressor to cycle on and off? Stays on for about 2 minutes and then goes off for about 30 seconds. Cools well, and I checked the cutoff switch on the freon line and it stays on so I think I have plenty of freon. By the way, if you put an Aspire engine in a Festy the ribbed belt will still work with the v belt pulley on the Festivas compressor. Don't know how long it will last but so far so good!

As for the belt ..How are you running a serpentine belt with a v belt pulley on the compressor ??
It has to be running on top of the pulley , or it is sucked down into it .
It will not stay on very long at high rpm , or may come apart early .
I would like to see a pic of that or a video of it running .------------------------------------------------

I was worried about all the same stuff but I just went ahead and put the belt on and ran it.
It's been about a week and it runs smooth as glass. Surprised the heck out of me. The belt
rides on the outside of the pulley but stays nice and flat and doesn't suck in at all. The belt needs to be longer and I have the number if anyone wants it. Can't post pictures, cameras broken. I'm just gonna see what it does, may wear belts out fast. Wish me luck - it will be hot soon!

The serpentine pulley won't fit on the festiva compressor and the festiva pulleys won't go on the Aspire engine (end of crank is bigger) I've been trying to come up with a solution for quite some time and it's the best I can do. I do like the Aspire engine though, best junkyard purchase I've ever made. Runs great and doesn't use oil. There are alot of issues getting it to work right in a carbed Festiva though. I can almost call myself an expert.

You"re kidding me! Everything I've read in the stickies and everywhere else says Festiva crank snouts are smaller. I've never heard that a '93s is bigger. Sure would be nice to make this thing original again. Wonder who would have a '93 set of crank pulleys lying around? My junkyard is out of Festivas right now.

Actually, the pulley/crank chage was during the 91 model year. I made an A/C pulley for the FMS crate engine from a primary pulley off the early small diam crank to work my A/C. It underdrives the compressor *slightly* from the original, but does work if you can't find a late model pulley. You do have to modify the bolt pattern to make this work, and I cannot guarantee multi thousands of miles of wear doing this though.
Also, to get your electric choke hooked up, all you need to do is hook up the red lead to it to a 12V ignition controlled circuit for it to work. That is all the alt plug is doing is providing constant 12V to the choke with the ignition switch on. If you use the ATX alt from 89, it boosts you alt output 5 amps to a 50 amp output. Handy for heavier electrical loads, and I have been using this and the 60 amp alts on mine for a few years now with no problems.

I had to run my electric choke through an 8 ohm resistor to get the time right. I think the original alternator lead for the choke is actually A.C. before it gets rectified. I took my '89 alt. apart to figure that out. Screwed it up so now I will need a new '89 alternator. Oops! My serpentine belt is still working fine with the V pulley though, even after driving way fast and long. It's not right but it is fun to try and get away with it!
