  • Need Help with 88' Carb Festiva...

Only few things I am not able to get fixed it with my 1988 Ford Festiva LX, I hope someone who can help me out the problems I have:

    1. When in cold start it would never kick up the Idle high, it dies out quick if I don't hold the gas pedal for awhile. But when it warm up already it will sit around 800 RPM stable? (Electric loads such fan and headlight on would kick up the idle at 1,000RPM - 1,100 RPM)

    2. The SIL lamp do come on when start up but it goes out once engine is running but it never turn on lamp when it time up shift? (I don't know where I can find the SIL sensor at?)

    Thanks for help!

#1 may be a choke problem. Try depressing the gas pedal all the way to engage the choke before truning the key in the ignition. Also try cleaning the throttle and choke linkages on the outside of the carburettor, eg spray with carb cleaner. Also try cleaning the pivots inside the carb by spraying with carb cleaner. Before trying to start the car in the morning you can take off the air cleaner to look at the choke plate before and after you depress the gas pedal all the way to engage the clutch. Hope that helps.

Sure sounds like the linkages are sticky. Also, the shift light will never come on with your car. It does not have one on an LX. That is a 4 speed thing only. No switch on the 5 spd trans.

Oh, and your car has full instrumentation dash with tach, right? There is no SIL light on those, I wonder if what you are seeing at startup is the MIL instead. It lights at startup to show it is working.

Yes, I do have tach/speedometer but it have SIL too, it said 'Shift up' next to fuel gauge

Alright, I guess I might have to look the 4 speed tranny the sensor switch.

I'll try adjust with choke if it would make any differents.

I have both early types of full instrumentation dashes, and none of them had SILs. Only ones that had that on my 88&9 cars were the basic cluster L models with 4 spds. The 4 spd transaxle had 2 sensors mounted on them, one for clutch interlock. the other was a sender that told the ECA the car was in 4th gear. All the MTX LXs I have had 5 spd MTX for 88, 5sp, or ATX 89. MTX 5 spds had only the clutch switch on them. No sender for the gear, Full clusters either had a check engine (MIL) or nothing at all. Yours must have been equipped different. Very interesting..... That makes 3 variations. How early an 88 do you have? Was it one of the 1987 cars by chance?(built in, that is)

Wild! Mine had the box for that SIL in behind on those clusters like yours, but no sign of the printing for it to show through behind or in front. The printed circuit bord on the back says that it would be used for "HAZARD", and the socket is taped off from the factory, Mine also has the defrost to the right of the MIL light(engine). One cluster I have does not have the MIL at all, just the defroster, and belts light. I believe that one was out of the 88, but I can't remember now which cluster is which for certain. Been too many years ago.
Oh, I almost forgot. I will have to loook at the 5 spd Trans in the 88 and see if it had that second switch on it. The other 5 spd I installed in Shtinky only had the clutch switch, no SIL switch was on it, nor hole to mount one in the case. The Ford factory EVTM states that the SIL is only used on the 4 spd trans on page 34 of the EVTM for 1989, and the service manual (1988 )shows only one switch in the illustrations, yet describes it as "switches". Very odd........

I would just *clean* the choke before attmpting to adjust anything.

My carburetted '89 L 4-speed has a square yellow light which comes on to suggest a higher gear may be appropriate. It's just a light, no print.

I discovered that my 60AMP alternator have all D.C. output which Festiva carb have unique one special PTC single red wire are supposed to be A.C. from alternator?

My PTC seem rarely work in cold start up.

Maybe the shift light on the tach dash was a CA thing?
