  • Exhaust pipe sticking up

As I was power spraying out the Festiva yesterday I noticed that from the cat there is a pipe, maybe 3/4" diameter, sticking up from it going nowhere. It's not a leaking thing because it's not making any noise, but does anyone know what that's for? Is it a heat riser or something? It's a 92 by the way. Can get a pic if needed.
Remember "I" before "E", except as in Budweiser.

If it's the same as my '94 carburetored Pride, it's an EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) pipe that feeds into the air cleaner box. There should be a rubber pipe that fits over the metal pipe coming from the cat to an ally box fitted to the side of the air cleaner box. The ally box appears to contain a course fibre. There's no valve.

Ford calls it the "pulse air system". Why they need that as well as an EGR system is a mystery to me.

Good question! I have been working to eliminate them on my cars. The stock intake is way too restrictive IMO, but the downpipe/cat is hard to find economically for the FI setup.
