HELP! My 93 L stock Festy transmission is making awful grinding noises in all 5 gears. It seems to be slightly less severe in 4th and 5th gear. It still shifts just fine and stays in all the gears. I had a friend suggest that the "bearings" were stripped. I know almost nothing about transmissions, so if you do please offer any suggestions you may have. I would hate to think that the tranny is shot, but it may be. It is a 5-speed manual. Thanks for your help. - Matthew

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? I try to start with the easy stuff and go from there, if it still shifts fine and stays in gear, maybe the fluid is low or it needs to be drained and replaced. My Festy had 132000 miles on it when I got it and apparently had the original tranny fluid in it. It looked and smelled terrible. Worth a shot before you go replacing the whole transmission.

I will check the fluid first. Thanks for the input. Syncro ring huh? Would I be better off rebuilding or swapping another tranny in there? How difficult would it be for me to swap another transmission in? I have moderate automotive knowledge, but I have never done anything like that before. What tools would I need and would I have to pull the engine? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -Matthew"If you can count your money, you don't have a billion dollars." - J. does it do it when ur coasting in nuetral with the engine off? hows about in gear with the clutch in? hows about out of gear with clutch in or out? tran swap: need socket set, breaker bar, pry bar, plyers and such: put in air, remove tires, remove half shafts, undo elect. connections, undo shift links, drop anti sway bar. losen bellhousing bolts, support crossmember with jack take bolts out of crossmember to frame. let jack down and slide towards drivers side till tran is out. the other way is with a cherry picker. undo any electrical connection on engine and tran. undo hoses and any mention items on other list. hook picker up, take engine mount bolts out and pull engine. about a days worth of work. I did mine in my drive way with a small jack in 2 hours. the rebuild kit would cost half of a junkyard tranny... I had the syncro ring, the time, tools, and the know how. so I just rebuilt mine.

I'm pretty sure from all that I've read in this forum and elsewhere that it is indeed a syncro ring. Where did you get that rebuild kit you were talking about? How much? Also, what type of fluid should I put back into the tranny when I'm done? I'll do this whether I rebuild or just swap a different one in. Is there an advantage to using synthetic over the regular stuff? Any information anyone can provide is very appreciated.
