the only time i ever had a shake from a CV joint was when it was about to break on me, it made a hell of a noise every time i turned a corner, so i would say the chances of that being the problem is next to none

I recently cured a bad case of high-speed shakes by replacing two old (but good tread) twelve-inch front tires, where there apparently was some internal separation of layers under the tread. A sharp tire guy spotted the irregular tread wear pattern. I've never even had the car aligned and can now peg the speedo at 85 with not the slightest sign of any shaking.

These little twelve-inchers have to spin at such high RPMs for the car to go fast that any imperfection can be critical.
