  • Rear Main Seal

Do you have to drop the oil pan to replace the rear main? If not how do you get the seal off?

    Thanks

you need to pull the engine or the trans. The seal is behind the flywheel.

      Thanks

AFAIK it's a one piece seal that is installed with a main cap in place, so the pan shouldn't have to be removed to R&R the seal

Remove transaxle as outlined in TRANSMISSIONS CLUTCHES DIFFERENTIALS AXLES AND DRIVE SHAFTS/COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR PROCEDURES/TRANSAXLE.
Remove flywheel attaching bolts and flywheel, then the engine rear cover plate, Fig. 17.
Remove seal retainer attaching bolts and seal retainer, then carefully pry out oil seal using suitable tool.
Lubricate, then install seal using suitable tool. Ensure that hollow side of seal faces toward engine.
Install seal retainer and tighten attaching bolts. Trim off excess gasket material after installation.
Install engine rear cover plate and tighten attaching bolts.
Install flywheel and tighten attaching bolts.
            Reinstall transaxle.

The tran and flywheel must come off.

Into the seal insert some sheet metal or wood screws...halfway between the OD of the crank and ID of the casting. Two screws 180° apart
Once the screws are in...pull on the head of the screws to pull the seal out.

If the screws pull out...use a pry driver to pick it out...Just be very carefull not to touch any of the metal sealing surfaces.

Soak the new seal in motor oil and also make sure the engine surface are wet with oil.
Place the seal in place and make sure the outer lip is tucked in.Slowly and evenly tap the new seal in place. A stub of a wooden dowel will woork well.
